PERMACULTURE
EARTH - PEOPLE - FAIR
At Serendipia de Arrebol, we believe that you cannot truly care for animals and the community without also caring for the soil we allstand on. Our project is built on the principles of permaculture; a way of designing our lives and land to mimic the balance of a natural ecosystem.
What is a food forest?
Unlike a traditional farm with rows of single crops, a Food Forest is a diverse, multi-layered garden that works like a natural woodland. We are planting fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, and perennial vegetables that all support one another. Once established, it becomes a self-sustaining system that feeds us and the local wildlife while requiring less "work" and more "observation."
It is a slow, gradual process, but we believe that the best things (like a forest or a sanctuary) take time to take root.
The 12 principles
of permaculture
1. OBSERVE & INTERACT

Take time to understand your site and its natural patterns before making changes.
4. APPLY SELF-REGULATION AND ACCEPT FEEDBACK

Learn from mistakes and adapt to ensure long-term sustainability.
2. CATCH & STORE ENERGY

Develop systems that collect resources (water, sun, organic matter) when they are abundant.
5. USE & VALUE RENEWABLE RESOURCES & SERVICES

Minimize reliance on non-renewable resources and maximize the use of natural, regenerative services.
3. OBTAIN A YIELD

Ensure that the work you do provides useful, tangible rewards.
6. PRODUCE NO WASTE

By valuing and using all available resources, nothing goes to waste.
7. DESIGN FROM PATTERNS TO DETAILS

Step back to observe patterns in nature and society, then fill in the details.
10. USE & VALUE DIVERSITY

Diversity reduces vulnerability to threats and takes better advantage of the environment.
8. INTEGRATE RATHER THAN SEGREGATE

Place elements in such a way that each serves the needs and accepts the products of others.
11. USE EDGES & VALUE THE MARGINAL

The interface between two systems (like land and water) is often the most diverse and productive.
9. USE SMALL & SLOW SOLUTIONS

Systems should be established at an appropriate scale, prioritizing slow, steady, and sustainable growth.
12. CREATIVELY USE & RESPOND TO CHANGE

Anticipate and adapt to changes, turning challenges into opportunities.
